Alpha support in ship / object textutres?

I wanted to ask if there is a way to utilize alpha (transparency) in ship textures, so far I have not been able to find luck with .png / .tga / .bmp methods.

Useful for glass, solar sails, space jellyfish, and the like.

  • This isn't supported by the 3D rendering engine right now. This is due to the complexity involved in alpha transparency in 3D. Proper alpha transparency requires depth sorting on all partially transparent faces. Else you get all kinds of rendering artifacts.

    Things like explosions are using alpha transparency, but they use a different blending mode which negates these artifacts. However, this isn't usable for window rendering.
